The regulatory body for the telecommunications sector, Nepal Telecommunications Authority, has banned the messaging app Telegram in Nepal.
The authority has issued a public notice and directed all telecommunications service providers to immediately block access to the Telegram app.
The public notice issued by the authority states that the number of online frauds through the Telegram app is continuously increasing.
“As the number of online frauds through the Telegram App operating in Nepal is continuously increasing and it has been understood that there is involvement in serious crimes such as money laundering, all relevant telecommunications service providers are hereby directed to immediately block/close access to the Telegram App.” the notice said.
